provoca displasia ectodermica autosomica.

The lack of hair is causes by a duplication of seven letters on the DNA in the gene FOXI3, pertaining to the family of the proteins, located in chromosome 17.
The protein help the correct production of the ectoderm and this mutation caused when 2 amino acids changed in the FOXI3 gene, causing authosomic ectodermic dysplasia.
Authosomic Ectodermic Dysplasia is inherit and not only appears in dogs, but also in humans where this disease is characterized by little hair, dental problems, skin problems and the defects on nails and sweat glands.

The gen that causes the lack of hair is dominant and semilethal, when 2 genes "without hair" (dominant homozygous) get together the mutation don't let the embryo to have a normal development and it never born; reason why it's impossible to have a line that only produces hairless dogs. If a dominant gene (hairless) get together with a recesive gene (coated), the gene that cause the lack of hair will dominate originating a hairless dog.

In theory if we mate two hairless dogs (heterozygous) 25% of the puppies will have 2 dominant genes and won't born (dominant homozygous), 50% will be hairless (heterozygous) and 25% will be coated (recesive homozygous). If a hairless and coated are mated half of the litter will be coated and the other half hairless; and if 2 coateds are mated all the litter will be coated.

Now they are making a study with chinese cresteds, to learn what's different between the true hairless, the medium hairless and the hairy hairless, let's see what comes out.
